A Systems Approach to Performance Analysis in Women’s Netball: Using Work Domain Analysis to Model Elite Netball Performance

Abstract: Netball is a newly professional women’s sport, as such there has been little research conducted investigating performance analysis (PA) in elite netball. The aim of this study was to develop a model of the elite netball performance system to identify the complex relationships among key performance indicators. Eleven elite subject matter experts (SMEs) participated in workshops to produce a systems model of the netball match performance. The model was developed using the work domain analysis (WDA) method. A mod… Show more

“…For example, In rugby 7's successful teams have been shown to win more lineouts from an opposition's throw (Higham, Hopkins, Pyne, & Anson, 2014); in basketball, winning teams gain more defensive rebounds (Garcia et al, 2013); and in handball, winning teams have a lower number of red card offenses (Saavedra, Porgeirsson, Chang, Kristjánsdóttir, & García-Hermoso, 2018). However, within the performance analysis literature it is acknowledged that recording these descriptive measures in isolation does little to provide an JSES ISSN: 2703-240X appropriate level of explanation for the complex inter and intra team dynamics that occur on the sports field (Mclean et al, 2019).…”

“…Various performance indicators in netball, such as successful and unsuccessful passes, goal scoring variables, turnovers, offensive and defensive rebounds, and penalties received have previously been reported (Croft et al, 2018;Mclean et al, 2019;O'Donoghue, Mayes, Edwards, & Garland, 2008;Pulling et al, 2016). For example, a sample of 59 British National Super League netball games from 2005-2008 were analysed to identify the key performance indicators that differentiate between top of the table and bottom of the table teams (O'Donoghue et al, 2008).…”

“…In contrast to officials in some other sports, the division of the court also necessitates that umpires stand in a co-operative role whilst play is in their co-umpire's area of control. For elite netball matches to be officiated at the highest standard possible, and therefore have the fairest outcome (Mclean et al, 2019), umpires must strive for optimal performance. Numerous studies in invasion ball sports officiating have highlighted the importance of officials' positioning for decision making accuracy.…”
