A Systems Approach for Process Simplification through Process Integration

Abstract: A new approach for process intensification through process simplification is proposed. This approach is based on a mass-integration framework for reducing the number of processing steps for grassroots and retrofit designs. Two procedures are presented based on graphical and mathematical programming techniques. The process simplification task is aimed at synthesizing process configurations that involve the least number of processing steps while yielding a certain product from a set of raw materials. The new con… Show more

“…On analytical scales, extra process steps are not a big complication. However, on industrial scales, simpler processes with only one or a few steps lead to more economic and sustainable processes [25,26]. A full process comprising a series of conventional extraction and purification methods (i.e.…”

“…8,37 It is well-known that solvents are the most detrimental part to the efficiency of processes, since they tend to leave residues, and parts of them are often emitted to the environment. An isolation step, for example by chromato- graphic methods, is indispensable to reach highly purified isoflavones.…”

“…In such processes, mathematical programming has been employed with relative success, and almost always found the global optimum. In the meantime, it doesn't provide good engineering insights, and it is normally difficult to formulate an accurate superstructure and to solve the set models [3].…”
