A systemic and cognitive view on collaborative knowledge building with wikis

Abstract: Wikis provide new opportunities for learning and for collaborative knowledge building as well as for understanding these processes. This article presents a theoretical framework for describing how learning and collaborative knowledge building take place. In order to understand these processes, three aspects need to be considered: the social processes facilitated by a wiki, the cognitive processes of the users, and how both processes influence each other mutually. For this purpose, the model presented in this a… Show more

“…The Suthers (2006) paper argues for a post-cognitive CSCL paradigm, Cress and Kimmerle (2008) propose a combination of systems theory and cognitive psychology and Kobbe et al (2007) introduce the theme of scripting in ijCSCL. The others report on examples of content analysis, argumentation support or scripting that are more empirically based.…”

“…However, in CSCL, except for the influential work by Ulrike Cress from the University of Tübingen, which has clearly been inspired by complex adaptive system theory (Cress and Kimmerle 2008;Cress et al 2015), few studies have used this approach. Some of the key concepts in complex adaptive systems theory are selforganization, emergence, interdependencies, and hierarchical nesting of levels.…”

“…Hewege and Perera (2013) focused on exploitation and functionality of wikis in curriculum design and sat the implications of a wiki-based pedagogy, which assumes an "emancipator", partial-"constructivist" paradigm of learning. At the same time Cress and Kimmerle (2008) suggested a model analyzing processes which take place in the social system of a wiki as well as in the cognitive systems of the users. The model also describes learning activities as a process of externalization and internalization.…”
