A systematic review with meta‐analyses of text message‐delivered behaviour change interventions for weight loss and weight loss maintenance

Abstract: Short Message Service (SMS)-delivered behaviour change interventions are frequently used to support weight management. This systematic review examines the effectiveness of SMS-delivered behaviour change interventions for weight management. Electronic databases were searched for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing SMS-delivered adult weight management interventions to control groups, published between 1990 and 2018. Weight change was examined using random effects meta-analyses at intervention cessatio… Show more

“…Individuals from disadvantaged groups may be less likely to participate in programs where the intervention or research procedures are burdensome [49]. Whilst some interventions targeted at men use physical activity and the appeal of sports settings [22,50], remotely delivered individual interventions can be effective [51], less burdensome and may be more inclusive of men that do not wish to or are unable to attend groups, participate in physical activity or who are not sports fans.…”

“…However, individual patient data meta-analyses of five of these trials with 1976 participants did not confirm the results. Another recent 2020 meta-analysis confirmed the benefits of text-messaging programmes on weight loss in overweight participants [ 18 •].…”

“…A recently published meta-analysis of text message-delivered interventions targeting weight loss maintenance found a similar significant intervention effect of -0.68 kg (95% CI -1.31, -0.05kg) (Skinner et al, 2020). This meta-analysis included the same three studies included in the published meta-analysis from this chapter (Job et al, 2017a) however the slight variation in results is likely due to the two intervention arms of the study by Shaw's group (Shaw et al, 2013b) being treated as separate studies rather than averaged.…”

“…These interventions included other components such as mobile phone apps in addition to the text messages. Skinner's group found a similar significant intervention effect of -2.28 kg (95% CI -3.17, -1.36, p<.00001) for 12 weight loss interventions delivered primarily by text message in adults with overweight and obesity (Skinner et al, 2020). Intervention duration of studies in these reviews ranged from eight weeks to 12 months.…”
