A systematic review on trends in using Moodle for teaching and learning

Abstract: Background The Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) is widely used in online teaching and learning, especially in STEM education. However, educational research on using Moodle is scattered throughout the literature. Therefore, this review aims to summarise this research to assist three sets of stakeholders—educators, researchers, and software developers. It identifies: (a) how and where Moodle has been adopted; (b) what the concerns, trends, and gaps are to lead future research and software … Show more

“…The overview of possible approaches to e-learning adaptivity and language learning has brought us to the conclusion that it is essential to find a solution that (a) adapts the learning content of the course according to student's needs, not only based on initial information about the student but based on his later study results as well, (b) is available for mass distribution using the open-source Moodle platform used in 251 countries with 211,000 installations and more than 250 million users [26], and (c) is simple to design and implement, while still offering the possibility for other parties to modify the proposed solution to meet their needs. In addition, for the solution to reach the masses, it should be versatile, i.e., usable for a large number of educational areas/subjects, not just limited to language area, reading skills, or mathematical operations.…”

“…This chapter introduces a VR learning experience evaluation tool highlighting key aspects instructors and educators should consider when designing and implementing VR learning experiences [2]. High fidelity graphics and immersive content using head mounted displays (HMD) have allowed students to explore complex subjects in a way that traditional teaching methods cannot [3][4].…”

“…Online learning, i.e. e-learning, has been applied in many higher education institutions around the world for the last 15-20 years (Ibrahim, Leng, Yusoff, Samy, Masrom & Rizman, 2017;Li, Zhan, Liu & Tong, 2022;Gamage, Ayres & Behrend, 2022;Ratna & Mehra, 2015;Cheng, 2012;Drennan, Kennedy & Pisarski, 2005). Elearning differs from the traditional way of learning in that it gives priority to individual learning over group learning, because it encourages students to learn individually at home, rather than in groups and classes (Al-Rahmi et al, 2018).…”
