A systematic review on the relationship between antisocial, borderline and narcissistic personality disorder diagnostic traits and risk of violence to others in a clinical and forensic sample

Abstract: Risk assessments identify the presence of a Personality Disorder diagnosis as relevant to future violence. At present, risk assessments focus on the presence of the disorder rather than identifying key traits related to risk. Systematic searches of three databases were conducted from January 2000 until August 2014. Of 92,143, 15 studies met the inclusion criteria. A lack of empirical research was found focusing on individual traits; instead most considered PD diagnosis as a sole entity. A preliminary model has… Show more

“…In an attempt to explain the association between aggression and PN, scholars have long focused on the notions of unstable self-esteem and threatened egotism (Baumeister et al, 2000; Lambe, Hamilton-Giachritsis, Garner, & Walker, 2018; Lowenstein, Purvis, & Rose, 2016; Rasmussen, 2016; Salmivalli, 2001). According to the threatened-ego hypothesis, interpersonal rejection or provocation threatens the vulnerable self-esteem of narcissistic individuals and elicits unpleasant emotions, such as shame and anger, from which they want to escape.…”

“…The close association between some of these conditions and reoffending (e.g. between cluster B Personality disorders and violent reoffending- Lowenstein et al, 2016), means that assessment of risk and collaboration between the MHS and CJS is a priority. Nurses and prison doctors responsible for treatment of the general population in local municipalities are also employed in prison on a part or full time basis and serve as a first source of support for mentally ill offenders.…”

“…Two of these appear to be particularly relevant because of their power for predicting violent offending: emotion dysregulation and impulsivity.Individuals demonstrating elevated levels of BPD symptomatology may have issues related to impulsivity and emotion dysregulation. However, while both of these constructs are characteristic of BPD, recent research has led to the conclusion that the BPD-violent offending relationship is likely better explained by a diminished capacity for regulating emotions [10]. Despite this growing sentiment, there is a dearth of research that examines both of these constructs together as mediators of the BPD-violent offending relationship to provide more complete understanding of the degree to which each…”
