A Systematic Review on the Use of Psychosocial Interventions in Conjunction With Medications for the Treatment of Opioid Addiction

Abstract: Opioid use and overdose rates have risen to epidemic levels in the United States over the past decade. Fortunately, there are effective medications (i.e., methadone, buprenorphine, and oral and injectable naltrexone) available for the treatment of opioid addiction. Each of these medications is approved for use in conjunction with psychosocial treatment; however, there is a dearth of empirical research on the optimal psychosocial interventions to use with these medications. “…Our findings suggest that discounting can be strongly influenced by the current environment. Thus, the possibility that delay discounting behavior could be susceptible to change through therapeutic interventions (e.g., contingency management) that enhance the relative value of delayed non-drug reinforcers (Dugosh et al 2016; Holtyn et al 2014; Lussier et al 2006) is important for future study at the behavioral and neurobiological levels.…”

“…This opioid tapering strategy is intended to reduce or altogether stop opioid use, but can result in withdrawal symptoms that curtail further dose reduction or cause relapse. For a more comprehensive review of therapeutic approaches, including nonopioid adjuvant strategies for managing opioid withdrawal, the reader is referred to other articles on this topic [2,5]. …”

“…Dugosh et al (2016) provided a useful service to readers by structuring their review of psychosocial treatment in conjunction with medication for opioid addiction by medication type (e.g., agonist v. antagonist), duration of medication treatment (maintenance v. detoxification) and types of “psychosocial treatment.” Unfortunately, the review did not specify what patient outcome was the focus of the review, the summary of the articles in the review were less than precise, and the discussion section considered all psychosocial treatments as if they were interchangeable.…”
