A Systematic Review of the Wound-Healing Effects of Monoterpenes and Iridoid Derivatives

Abstract: Abstract:The search for more effective and lower cost therapeutic approaches for wound healing remains a challenge for modern medicine. In the search for new therapeutic options, plants and their metabolites are a great source of novel biomolecules. Among their constituents, the monoterpenes represent 90% of essential oils, and have a variety of structures with several activities such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and wound healing. Based on that, and also due to the lack of reviews concerni… Show more

“…Iridoids are compounds derived from geraniol belonging to the class of monoterpenes. A subclass of the iridoids are the iridoid glycosides, which are terpenes bound to glucose molecules (Barreto et al, 2014). described the isolation from the leaf extract of M. citrifolia of a new iridioid glycoside, called citrifolinoside A, along with two other known iridoid glycosides, asperuloside and asperulosidic acid.…”

“…There is a wide range of possible therapeutic pharmacological uses for terpenes including as: anticancer drugs, analgesics, anti-inflammatories, neuroprotective agents, immune modulators and in wound healing (Ali et al, 2013; Araujo-Filho, Quintans-Junior, Barreto, Almeida, Barreto & Quintans, 2016;Barreto et al, 2014; In general, terpenes represent a heterogeneous group of chemical substances constructed from hydrocarbons. They consist of the combination of several 5-carbon-base units called isoprenes (C5H8), mainly in a head-to-tail linkage.…”

“…2 Aucubin activities have been extensively studied, such as for anticancer, 2-3 immunomodulator, 2 and for the treatment of mucous membrane inflammation of nasopharyngeal channels. 4 In addition, aucubin also has wound healing activity on oral mucous and dermal wound, 5 as well as inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. 6 However, so far there has been no report on aucubin activity for diabetic wound healing.…”
