A Systematic Review of the Role of Robotics in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery—From Inception to the Future

Abstract: BackgroundThe use of robots in surgery has become commonplace in many specialties. In this systematic review, we report on the current uses of robotics in plastic and reconstructive surgery and looks to future roles for robotics in this arena.MethodsA systematic literature search of Medline, EMBASE, and Scopus was performed using appropriate search terms in order to identify all applications of robot-assistance in plastic and reconstructive surgery. All articles were reviewed by two authors and a qualitative s… Show more

“…16 Moreover, scar burden is reduced, as well as postoperative pain and hospital stay. 17 In this robotic-enhanced cadaveric model, we compared performance outcomes of two different approaches for DIEP flap harvest. Although the TAPP approach has less technical features and showed less operative time compared with the TEP approach, it involves all the potential complications related to entering and working in the peritoneal cavity, such as adhesion formation and potential bowel obstruction, as well as bowel injury.…”

“…From literature review, microvascular anastomosis is the most widely-discussed issue, especially in head and neck reconstruction. 20 Different approaches such as muscle flap harvesting, pedicle dissection, lymph-venous anastomosis have also been studied and reported. 16,21 However, the use of robotics in peripheral nerve reconstruction still lacks persuasive evidence.…”

“…Over the past decade, the potential and feasibility of robotic reconstructive microsurgery has been enthusiastically discussed and the potentialindications have been tried and reported. 19,20 Microsurgery is one of the popular indications for the use of robotics. From literature review, microvascular anastomosis is the most widely-discussed issue, especially in head and neck reconstruction.…”
