“…Among these, payment for watershed ecosystem services (PWES) is one of the most important mechanisms ensuring the sustainable development of the ecological environment (Pan et al, 2021). Such a strategy has been piloted in many countries, including, for example, the wastewater discharge program along the United States-Mexico border, water resource protection in New York, the water-soil conservation fund in Ecuador, and compensation between the French Vittel mineral water company and farmers in water source areas (Perevochtchikova et al, 2021). Combining the flexibility of PWES with efficient government management, the Chinese government has also proposed watershed ecological compensation (EC) schemes .…”
