This paper analyzes the optimal sizing of a particular solution for renewable energy residential building integration. The solution combines a photovoltaic (PV) plant with a heat pump (HP). The idea is to develop a system that permits the maximum level of self-consumption of renewable energy generated by using a small-scale solar array installed on the same building. The problem is analyzed using data obtained from an experimental system installed in a building in Pisa, Italy. The residential house was equipped with a PV plant (about 3.7 kW of peak power), assisting a HP of similar electrical power (3.8 kW). The system was monitored for eight years of continuous operation. With reference to the data acquired from the long-term experimental analysis and considering a more general perspective, we discuss criteria and guidelines for the design of such a system. We focus on the possibility of exporting energy to the electrical grid, from the perspective of obtaining self-consumption schemes. Considering that one of the problems with small-scale PV plants is represented by the bidirectional energy flows from and to the grid, possible alternative solutions for the design are outlined, with both a size reduction in the plant and utilization of a storage system considered. Different design objectives are considered in the analysis.

Hybrid photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) collectors have been widely investigated in recent decades since they ensure higher performances and compactness with respect to the two sub-components. In this study, a novel covered PVT water collector, specifically designed to be coupled with heat pumps, is presented. The PV-cells are directly laminated on the aluminium roll-bond absorber without the usual front glass layer, while a glass cover is added after the lamination, creating an air gap with the PV-absorber laminate. The novel collector has electrical features similar to those of uncovered PVTs, in which the front glass layer is laminated in contact with PV-cells and even better performances than a traditional covered collector, which has a second glass cover on top. The electric performances of the PVT, operated in stand-alone mode and solar-assisted mode, were monitored and compared with a traditional PV module, obtaining interesting results in both conditions. In particular, the novel PVT showed comparable and even better electric performances than the traditional PV when combined with the heat pump, thanks to PV-cells active cooling. The work proves that the proposed manufacturing technique could lead to a new generation of hybrid collectors, which may achieve competitive performances when integrated with heat pumps.

A solar polymer heat exchanger is designed to heat water; its primary materials are plastic water bottles with a capacity of 1.5 liters. These materials were recycled to preserve the environment and to make use of it again. The thermal insulation properties are adopted for the characterization of polymeric materials. These properties concern the conservation of energy for the longest period of time and the absence of problems caused by rust and corrosion, which are usually encountered in traditional heat exchangers. The heat exchanger experiments start by tracking the flow of water inside the pipes by a valve. The water temperature and flow rates are determined at the inlet and outlet surfaces of the exchanger. The obtained results indicated an increase in water temperature exceeding 10℃ in an ideal spring day. The thermal efficiency of the solar collector was about 62% under the sunlight, and 44% in the laboratory where halogen lamps were used as an industrial light source.
