A systematic review of municipal smart water for climate adaptation and mitigation

Abstract: This study examines how research on smart water is contributing to climate-resilient municipal water systems around the globe. We identify smart water research trends over time, relationships with climate adaptation and mitigation goals, and applicability to places with developed or developing water and electrical infrastructure. To do so, we systematically review the literature, identifying research on Information Communication Technology-enabled technologies related to water supply, wastewater, and stormwate… Show more

“…Even though municipalities have a significant role in increasing the motivation of citizens regarding climate-friendly and sustainable actions (Glaas et al, 2020 ), there are limits to their capabilities and impacts. Hence, it is argued that municipalities should cooperate with the business world more ambitiously and systematically (Neij and Heiskanen, 2021 ) and improve their climate actions with technological developments (Lassiter and Leonard, 2022 ).…”

“…Smart water management systems, leveraging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and remote sensing, are at the forefront of transforming traditional water management approaches. These technologies enable real-time monitoring of water systems, predictive analytics for demand and supply management, and efficient leak detection and water quality assessment, thereby improving the sustainability and resilience of water resources (Lassiter & Leonard, 2022). In Africa, technological interventions are increasingly critical in addressing the unique water management challenges of geographic and socio-economic conditions.…”

“…Some empirical examples of efficient resource management are provided in the paper by Lassiter and Leonard (2022), who demonstrate how smart solutions and technologies such as advanced metering infrastructure and distributed sensors for early detection of changes in water quality contribute to improving resource efficiency. Integrating such technologies into the water supply, distribution, and sewerage systems can also provide multiple co-benefits for human health and climate change adaptation and mitigation.…”
