A systematic review of intracranial chondrosarcoma and survival

Abstract: Most data regarding survival in patients with chondrosarcoma are limited to case studies and small series performed at single institutions. A systematic review was performed to study the relationship between proposed prognostic factors and survival. Every study published in the English literature was reviewed. The mortality rates in these patients were analyzed according to modality of treatment, treatment history, histological subtype, and histological grade. A total of 560 patients with cranial chondrosarcom… Show more

“…In a meta-analysis of 560 patients with intracranial chondrosarcoma, Bloch et al detected a 5-year recurrence rate of 44% after surgery alone and 9% after combined treatment with surgery and irradiation. 3 In the current study, we were able to demonstrate a 5-year recurrence rate of only 4.1%, without any significant difference noted between biopsy and R2 surgical resection. There is a high rate of neurological complications after surgery (33%).…”

“…In this evaluation of 560 patients, radiotherapy when used as the only treatment even demonstrated a significantly lower 5-year recurrence rate compared with surgery alone (19% vs 44%). 3,4 Furthermore, surgical treatment of chondrosarcomas of the skull base has a high risk of neurological side effects. Samii et al reported a neurological complication rate of 33.3% and an incidence of cerebrospinal fluid leakage of 10.3%.…”

“…In a large retrospective study conducted across several medical institutes, Frezza et al [9] showed that complete resection and adjuvant therapy were very important as standard of care for localized disease. Bloch et al [3] also found that 5-year mortality among patients treated by surgery alone was 25% compared to 9% among those treated with surgery and radiotherapy (P < 0.0001). Thus, radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be considered to reduce the risk of recurrence, or to treat patients with unresectable tumors and for those in whom the surgical margins are inadequate after radical surgery.…”

“…The grading system of the World Health Organization (WHO) consists of three categories: grade I (well differentiated), grade II (moderately differentiated) and grade III (poor differenti- Intracranial Chondrosarcoma J Med Cases. 2018;9(5):135-138 ated) [3]. The pathogenesis is believed to originate from remnants of embryonal cartilage, metaplasia of meningeal fibroblasts, or primitive multipotent mesenchymal cells within the meninges.…”
