BIM Application in Multi-Criteria Assessment of Suspended Brickwork Façade Production Methods for a Reconstructed Building

This research aims to promote a new cost-saving method for rebuilding old masonry brickwork façade by installing a suspended brickwork system. This research introduces a case study for rebuilding masonry façade by applying MCDM (multiple-criteria decision making) and BIM (building information modeling) methodologies with the evaluation of three types of brickwork façade installation alternatives prepared for production. The first type is the installation of suspended brickwork and mounting of brickwork lintels; the second type is the installation of suspended brickwork and pre-prefabricated stainless-steel components, which have been manufactured offsite, completed with adhesively bonded brick slips; and the third type is the installation of prefabricated suspended brickwork masonry panels. The main aim of the research is to promote a cost-saving production method by comparing these three alternative types of brickwork production using the BIM application in accordance with the multiple-criteria assessments. A multiple-criteria system was developed, and an expert survey was employed to estimate the relative weights of the criteria; afterwards, the alternatives were assessed using the WASPAS (Weighted Aggregated Sum Product Assessment) method. A BIM brickwork façade model was developed based on survey data, analyzed design solutions, and adaptation for the production of suspended brickwork elements. The final results and details regarding the best BIM applications in the multiple-criteria assessment of suspended brickwork façade are presented in the conclusions.

The paper presents an original approach to construction cost analysis and development of predictive models based on ensembles of artificial neural networks. The research was focused on the application of two alternative approaches of ensemble averaging that allow for combining a number of multilayer perceptron neural networks and developing effective models for cost predictions. The models have been developed for the purpose of forecasting construction costs of sports fields as a specific type of construction objects. The research included simulation and selection of numerous neural networks that became the members of the ensembles. The ensembles included either the networks of different types in terms of their structure and activation functions or the networks of the same type. The research also included practical implementation of the developed models for cost analysis based on a sports field BIM model. This case study examined and confirmed all of the four models’ predictive capabilities and superiority over models based on single networks for the particular problem. Verification including testing and the case study enabled selection of the best ensemble-based model that combined ten networks of different types. The proposed approach is prospective for fast cost analyses and conceptual estimates in construction projects.

Energy consumption and carbon emission of conventional and green buildings using building information modelling (BIM)

PurposeUsing building information modelling (BIM) technology, a conventional structure in this study was converted into a green building to measure its energy usage and CO2 emissions.Design/methodology/approachDigital images of the existing building conditions were captured using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and were fed into Meshroom to generate the building’s geometry for 3D parametric model development. The model for the existing conventional building was created and converted to an energy model and exported to gbXML in Autodesk Revit for a whole building analysis which was carried out in the Green Building Studio (GBS). In the GBS, the conventional building was retrofitted into a green building to explore their energy consumption and CO2 emission.FindingsBy comparing the green building model to the conventional building model, the research found that the green building model saved 25% more energy while emitting 46.8% less CO2.Practical implicationsThe study concluded that green building reduces energy consumption, thereby reducing the emission of CO2 into the environment. It is recommended that buildings should be simulated at the design stage to know their energy consumption and carbon emission performance before construction.Social implicationsOccupant satisfaction, operation cost and environmental safety are essential for sustainable or green buildings. Green buildings increase the standard of living and enhance indoor air quality.Originality/valueThis investigation aided in a pool of information on how to use BIM methodology to retrofit existing conventional buildings into green buildings, showing how green buildings save the environment as compared to conventional buildings.
