A Systematic Review of Antibiotic Resistance Trends and Treatment Options for Hospital-Acquired Multidrug-Resistant Infections

Abstract: Antimicrobial resistance is a major public health challenge described by the World Health Organization as one of the top 10 public health challenges worldwide. Drug-resistant microbes contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality in the hospital, especially in the critical care unit. The primary etiology of increasing antibiotic resistance is inappropriate and excessive use of antibiotics. The alarming rise of drugresistant microbes worldwide threatens to erode our ability to treat infections with our cu… Show more

“…To measure the antimicrobial activity of OTOA, we used the paper disk method with several bacterial strains such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Raoultella terrigena ( Klebsiella terrigena ) and Agrobacterium tumefaciens . The choice of bacteria was determined by their antibacterial resistance [ 63 , 64 , 65 , 66 ]. Raoultella terrigena ( Klebsiella terrigena ) is an opportunistic pathogen.…”

“…It refers to microorganisms, mainly bacteria, viruses, and fungi, that become resistant to multiple drugs and treatments that were primarily designed to target them. This is often the result of the indiscriminate use of antibiotics in the healthcare, veterinary, and agricultural industries [ 68 , 69 ]. Inadequate antibiotic and dosing choices and unnecessarily extended treatment have also contributed to the problem.…”

“…Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria have been acknowledged as one of the most important public health problems. Inappropriate drug usage promotes the emergence and spread of MDR bacteria as infectious diseases become more prevalent, and the limited number of drugs can no longer meet the demand for treatment ( 1 ). The exploration of rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) based on molecular methods represents an attractive approach for the early detection of MDR bacteria.…”
