A systematic review including an additional pediatric case report: Pediatric cases of mammary analogue secretory carcinoma

Abstract: CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Since the first case of MASC in the pediatric population was described in 2011, only 12 cases, including this one, have been described in the literature. With this paucity of information, much remains unknown regarding this new pathologic diagnosis. The collection of clinical outcomes data of children with MASC is needed to better understand the behavior of this malignancy as well as determine optimal treatment regimens.

“…In addition, we reviewed all published cases of SC in which follow‐up data of 6 months or greater were available by conducting a PubMed search using the terms “mammary analog secretory carcinoma,” “mammary analogue secretory carcinoma,” “secretory carcinoma,” and “MASC.” SC‐like tumors of nonsalivary gland origin were excluded. We identified 26 case reports and series totaling 170 patients with reported outcome data as shown in Table . Patient data from all publications were combined in order to assess recurrence rate and pattern.…”

“…We identified 26 case reports and series totaling 170 patients with reported outcome data as shown in Table 1. Patients were not doublecounted if appearing in more than one publication and due to variable follow-up reporting, actuarial survival analysis was not attempted.…”

“…1,2 The average age of presentation of the tumor is in the fourth or fifth decade, with only a few cases being reported in children and adolescents, and is slightly more prevalent in men. 2,3,6 Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma commonly presents as a slow growing, painless mass. The size of the mass ranges from 0.2 to 5.5 cm, with an average size of 1.7 cm.…”
