A systematic review and quality analysis of pediatric traumatic brain injury clinical practice guidelines

Abstract: BackgroundTraumatic brain injuries (TBI) are a significant cause of mortality and morbidity for children globally. Adherence to evidence-based treatment guidelines have been shown to improve TBI outcomes. To inform the creation of a pediatric TBI management guideline for a low and middle income country context, we assessed the quality of available clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for the acute management pediatric TBI.MethodsArticles were identified and retrieved from MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, LILA… Show more

“…The overall assessment of conformity between reviewers across each domain was calculated using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) with 95% CIs (14). ICC that was 0.75 or higher was interpreted as excellent reliability, 0.40 to 0.75 as moderate reliability and less than 0.40 as poor reliability (15)(16)(17). Descriptive and statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS version 23.0 (IBM Corporation).…”

“…Amer et al contest that Rigour of Development is the largest AGREE II domain [36] and is arguably the core of the AGREE II instrument [36;37], so it is a concern that 5 out of 7 guidelines in our review score very poorly in this domain (mean = 30%). This domain evaluates whether the guidelines use a robust systematically searched evidence base that is critically appraised by a development team with broad clinical and technical expertise [38]. With the exception of two CPGs [1;31], the evidence base used was restricted (low number of references) and poorly selected (weak studies).…”
