A systematic review and meta-analysis of studies comparing burden from lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Abstract: Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer are both life-limiting diseases that confer burden in the form of symptoms and affect functioning and quality of life. Comparing burden between these diseases is of interest to determine whether people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease require improved access to Specialist Palliative Care. Access should be based on needs rather than diagnosis or prognosis but is limited for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease compared to l… Show more

“…Its pathogenic factors are smoking, air pollution, inhalation of dust and harmful gases, and respiratory tract infection. The disease is clinically distinguished by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation [ 2 ], severely affecting patients' life safety and at the same time causing a heavy economic burden on patients and their families. With the continuously deepened clinical research in recent years, attention has been paid to respiratory training in clinical work for patients with stable COPD [ 3 , 4 ].…”

“…However, findings from our research group suggest that COPD patients report variations in their symptom burden based on their stage of disease [13]. In addition, research suggests COPD patients in a terminal stage of disease may experience a higher symptom burden compared to cancer patients, possibly because COPD patients often live longer with their disease burden [41,42]. Prolonged shortness of breath has previously been associated with symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbance, depression, anxiety, pain, and a higher number of comorbidities, as well as being a significant predictor of mortality in COPD [43][44][45].…”
