Digital learning environments have been gaining prominence during the last few years. In particular, the rising usage of mobile devices, including smartphones and tabs, has invited researchers to design and develop learning applications and games for such platforms. Mobile applications and games have been developed for learning languages like many other domains. However, most of these games are fun-based and lack a holistic design and development approach. Therefore, as a principal contribution, this research presents a theoretical model for designing language learning games in a cultural context. The proposed model combines the elements of sociocultural theory with the concepts and elements of gamification, keeping in view the requirements and educational settings, including level and mode of education, etc., to ensure the effectiveness and usability of the developed game. Subsequently, based on the proposed model, a Language Learning Game (LLG) has been designed and developed through a systematic process that involves game design, low-fidelity, and high-fidelity prototyping and its validation. The LLG has been evaluated comprehensively at different stages by incorporating standard methods. Whereby this research augments the existing set of heuristics by proposing a number of specialized heuristics for the evaluation of serious games to gauge their conformance to the cultural context. The evaluation results show that the game has overall usability scores of 90%. While the quasi-experiment-based pre-test and post-test have been conducted, the results reveal that the results obtained by LLG are statistically significantly better than adopted mobile application and traditional group.

The development of information technology and the progress of the educational information process provide technical support for the construction of a distance learning environment for learning English. Online teaching mode is a new thing for people, and it is more and more accepted by people familiar with it. We summarize and analyze the texts of short messages generated by students’ online learning, so as to fully understand students, make effective adjustments to the classroom, guide teachers’ teaching practices, optimize the classroom, and improve students’ learning, practical, and innovative abilities, in order to study the effect of online teaching on improving the ability and skills of learning English efficiently. This paper builds wireless distance teaching based on the English learning system of mobile edge computing and uses the method of case analysis and literature analysis to collect data from the database. A model was built based on online teaching, and a large number of relevant documents were read and analyzed through the literature survey method. The results of the study show that online teaching can effectively improve students’ oral and reading abilities. Students’ oral and reading abilities are about 30% higher than traditional teaching methods, and the awareness of cooperation among students has also increased by 80% compared to before, which solves the problem of popularization and improvement. The contradiction and the resolution of polarization and the transformation of underachievers, so that students’ personalities can be brought into full play and development, and college education will be on the track of quality education. This shows that the wireless long-distance teaching environment constructed by the English learning system based on mobile edge computing can play an excellent role in improving English ability.

Technology 4.0 has forced the education system to undergo a huge transformation by changing teaching and learning methods. Teaching 4.0 requires teachers to apply varieties of technology used in the teaching and learning process to make it more appealing to new millennials. However, the response to this change has been relatively slow. Consequently, the preparation of effective teaching methods and strategies from educators that can benefit students through learning from differentiated learning styles. Thus, the aim of this study is to collect and extract information from the literature in searching for the research gap, and analyse the most significant studies on the teaching of 4.0 competency in a Higher Learning Institution. The searching process will focus on papers published in journals or presented at specialised international conferences from 2015 until 2021 using a systematic mapping review (SMR). A total of 380 relevant research papers from Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholars online databases and grey literature were retrieved. Nine final papers were selected in the study. Results from the review showed that the predefined requirement criteria for Teaching 4.0 competencies were not all satisfied in literature. There are limited studies on the Teaching 4.0 competency. Thus, a conceptual framework of measurement for Teaching 4.0 competencies should be developed. It could act as a solution by providing a comprehensive competency measurement and to determine relevant 4.0 competency among Higher Learning Institution educators.
