A systematic literature review of sociotechnical systems in systems engineering

Abstract: Systems engineers use the term sociotechnical system in academic literature and in their practice. Sociotechnical systems are gaining more attention as systems engineers aspire to address the social elements of their systems engineering practice as well as societal challenges, such as those included in the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) Vision 2035. Even though there is a basic working definition of sociotechnical system in the Systems Engineering Book of Knowledge (SEBoK), use of the te… Show more

“…It underscores the importance of innovation characteristics and the role of change agents in facilitating the adoption process. In contrast, Socio-Technical Systems Theory illuminates how these technologies are integrated into small and medium-sized enterprises' social and organizational structures, emphasizing the need to align technological solutions with human factors to ensure seamless integration and improved organizational activities [33]. This dual-framework approach enables a comprehensive analysis of both the technological and social dimensions influencing cybersecurity adoption in SMEs and developing targeted strategies to overcome technology acceptance barriers and maximize the effectiveness of cybersecurity implementations.…”

“…Many small and medium-sized firms prioritize technological upgrades and process optimization when launching a digital initiative. Unfortunately, this frequently leads to firms ignoring cybersecurity, leaving them open to cyber threats and potential assaults [33]. This fragmented strategy can cause significant disruptions, financial losses, and reputational harm.…”

“…While IWRM was being developed, the search for other frameworks continued in parallel, especially about conflict resolution and the incorporation of social and environmental values in decision making. New paradigms that were developed with similarities to IWRM included Total Water Management [37], One Water [38], Total Water Solutions [39], and versions of systems engineering that seek the merge analysis of technical and socio-technical systems [40]. None of these frameworks has gained as much traction globally as IWRM, although in the US, the One Water concept is currently receiving emphasis.…”

“…The development of these capabilities and the involved systems are increasingly complex. The complexity is, among other factors, due to the further integration of systems (systems of systems), which are largely supported by digitalization [1], the scope increases from cyber-physical systems [2] to socio-technical systems [3] and a shortage of individual and organizational competence. This increase takes place in the development of systems and capabilities, e.g., in the organizations, processes, and humans with their individual human characteristics, and in the later life cycle when operating in a political, economic, social, technical, environmental, and legal (PESTEL) context.…”
