A systematic literature review of physiotherapy and rehabilitation approaches to lower-limb amputation

Abstract

LLA rehabilitation is a topic that requires the focus of current and future studies; evidence-based studies are required on the approaches to rehabilitation for specific LLA groups.

Functional outcomes of people with lower limb amputation following inpatient rehabilitation

“…Rehabilitation of a person with lower limb amputation has been defined as "the combined and coordinated complex of medical, paramedical, technical and psychosocial measures, with the goal of allowing the patient to function as well as possible after amputation" (Geertzen, 2015b p.362). Rehabilitation following a lower limb amputation is ideally tailored to achieve the individual's goals (Geertzen, 2001) and should maximise a person's capacity, reduce dependency and improve quality of life (Ulger, 2018). Regaining independence in activities of daily living (ADL's) and mobility have been shown to positively influence residential status post-amputation (Dawson, 1995) so rehabilitation often focuses on improving independence and mobility.…”
