A systematic literature review of indicators measuring food security

Abstract: Measurement is critical for assessing and monitoring food security. Yet, it is difficult to comprehend which food security dimensions, components, and levels the numerous available indicators reflect. We thus conducted a systematic literature review to analyse the scientific evidence on these indicators to comprehend the food security dimensions and components covered, intended purpose, level of analysis, data requirements, and recent developments and concepts applied in food security measurement. Data analysi… Show more

“…It has been proven that the national set of indicators of the state of food security (Table 1) contains a limited number of indicators. We agree with the scientific position of the authors of the work [9], who emphasizes that the indicator of calorie sufficiency at the household level is most often used as the only indicator of food security. We also draw attention to the rather limited list of indicators proposed in the methodological recommendations of Ukraine [12] for assessing food security.…”

“…Proper intervention mechanisms demand proper analysis of food insecurity. Nevertheless, most of the previous researches have analyzed food security by considering only the food availability and access to food components [ 29 ]; and the utilization and stability aspects were seldom addressed when analyzing food security. Similarly, many food insecurity studies in Ethiopia used one or combined indicators of food security where the key components of food security were not fully addressed [ 44 ].…”

“…The measurement of food insecurity is complex and there is no single instrument capturing all of the dimensions of food security (Manikas et al, 2023). Instruments such as the household food security survey module (HFSSM), household hunger scale (HHS), household food insecurity experience scale (FIES), and among others are validated to measure food insecurity at household level (Cafiero et al, 2018;Pe´rez-Escamilla, 2012); and often measure the food accessibility dimension (Anderson, 2018a(Anderson, , 2018b.…”
