A Systematic Literature Review of College and Career Readiness Frameworks for Students With Disabilities

Abstract: A systematic review was conducted to understand the extent of empirical support for College and Career Readiness (CCR) frameworks and whether or not students with disabilities (SWD) are included in these frameworks. We identified 26 articles that showed a complex set of domains with both academic and nonacademic skills. Findings showed few studies reported empirical research concerning CCR frameworks for SWD and there was a strong emphasis on college and academic outcomes. Suggestions for future research inclu… Show more

“…While it is possible that the search terms used to compile this review may have missed studies specifically related to CCR, it was anticipated that any articles focusing on education for "career," "career readiness," "college and career readiness," or "career and technical education" would be captured using the search terms "education" and "employment." Further, it has been reported that studies on CCR interventions for youth in JJ settings are absent from the literature and this same disparity has been documented in other vulnerable populations (Osborn & Belle, 2019, Monahan et al, 2020. A systematic literature review of CCR in students with disabilities by Monahan et al (2020) located only 26 studies that broadly addressed CCR domains and few studies reported empirical This document is copyrighted by the American Psychological Association or one of its allied publishers.…”

“…This includes undocumented students, whose right to K-12 education was established in Plyler v. Doe (1982). College and career readiness (CCR) is multidimensional, typically described in terms of academic and non-academic skills, and definitions vary by state (Monahan et al, 2020). One of the most comprehensive definitions, offered in the state of Oregon, operationalizes CCR in two categories: Learning strategies, thinking skills, and academic knowledge, with 14 specific elements, and transition skills and workplace behaviors, with 16 elements (Mishkind, 2014).…”

“…In this practice brief, we propose that higher education institutions need to serve as spaces for college SWD to authentically engage in career choices in ways that are consistent with personal values and the life purpose deriving from them, by (a) providing targeted career services for SWD; (b) building business partnerships through which SWD can develop careers; and (c) incorporating disability as a critical diversity factor of the institution for service effectiveness and sustainability. Our operationalized definition of college SWD takes a broad view that encompasses veterans as well as SWD at all degree levels, as most colleges only focus on stereotypical, first time in any college students between the ages of 18-22 (Monahan et al, 2020).
