A systematic exploration of differences in contextual factors related to implementing the MOVE! weight management program in VA: A mixed methods study

Abstract: BackgroundIn January 2006, Veterans Affairs (VA) disseminated the MOVE!® Weight Management Program to VA medical centers to address the high prevalence of overweight/obesity. In its second year, MOVE! implementation varied widely across facilities. The objective of this study was to understand contextual factors that facilitated or impeded implementation of MOVE! in VA medical centers in the second year after its dissemination.MethodsWe used an embedded mixed methods cross-sectional study design. “…Managers are not necessarily leaders, but the roles of leaders and managers usually overlap (Yukl, 2006). Research on leadership in relation to implementation of EBP has usually conceptualized leadership as supervisory or managerial leadership (Cummings et al, 2010;Damschroder et al, 2011;Forsman et al, 2012;Gifford Davies, Edwards, Griffin, & Lybanon, 2007;Reichenpfader et al, 2015). However, we specifically sought to include managers whose characteristics were consistent with established definitions of leaders.…”

“…Through its Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) program and the Center for Implementation Practice and Research Support (CIPRS), a resource center for implementation science, the VHA has provided structures and methods for collaboration between researchers and clinical and operational partners to move evidence-based practices into the field [10][11][12]. HSR&D investigators have generated new conceptual models for translation [8,13,14], innovations in evaluation methodologies [15,16], and working laboratories that facilitate change in health care delivery [11,17,18]. The co-location of research and clinical activities within the VHA and the emphasis on quality and implementation provides an environment where findings from clinical research in behavioral medicine can be applied in clinical settings with close collaboration between researchers and clinicians during the translation [9].…”
