“…This phase incorporates the rationale and aims of the study. Meta-ethnography, first developed by Noblit and Hare [6] has provided insight into a range of healthcare experiences including chronic musculoskeletal pain [10], rheumatoid arthritis [11], fibromyalgia [12], osteoporosis [13] and chronic pelvic pain [14]. There are various methods for QES [15][16][17][18][19].…”

“…As daily activities reflect a person's interests, abilities and experience, limitations in performing these activities serve as daily reminders that one's abilities have diminished, and cause feelings of being trapped in a body without energy (Alsaker & Josephsson, ). Bodily restrictions can also prompt alienation from one's body, as it no longer functions as desired (Toye et al, ).…”

“…In choosing a method for synthesising qualitative research we examined a range of approaches (see Dixon-Woods et al, [35] for a summary), but selected meta-ethnography as we agreed with Noblit and Hare's [36] contention that 'the synthesis of qualitative research should be as interpretive as any ethnographic account.' Designed by Noblit and Hare as a means of synthesising ethnographic studies of school desegregation in the United States [36], metaethnography has been applied and further developed within health research [37][38][39][40], and has previously been used to examine the impacts of health on employment [26,28,29,41]. Metaethnography aims to develop new interpretations and insights from existing qualitative literature and does so through the synthesis of key concepts identified in a set of individual studies into higher-order interpretations.…”

“…Synthesising international evidence from 19 papers based on 15 qualitative studies, Toye et al [26] argue that workers with chronic and unpredictable MSD pain struggle to retain their credibility as valuable workers whilst simultaneously trying to maintain a work-life balance.…”
