A synopsis of the species of Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882 (Myxozoa: Bivalvulida) parasitising Indian fishes and a revised dichotomous key to myxosporean genera

Abstract: A synopsis of 131 nominal species of Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882 (Myxozoa: Myxosporea: Myxobolidae) reported from India is presented. For each species, the relevant morphometric and morphological data are indicated, as well as the host(s), site(s) of infection within the host and locality data. A revised dichotomous key of 59 genera of the class Myxosporea has also been included. This key incorporates 10 additional genera to that proposed in 1991 by Lom & Dyková.

“…Gill myxosporeans are common on aquacultured and wild fish of India and vast array of literatures are available on the taxonomy and host ranges (Basu and Haldar 2004;Bandyopadhyay et al 2006;Basu et al 2009;Kaur and Singh 2012;Singh and Kaur 2012). Spore morphology has been used as a basic feature to identify myxosporean species.…”

“…Of the approximately 800 species of Myxobolus globally, 131 species have been recorded in India, most of which are characterized by morphological and morphometrics of the spores (Kaur and Singh, 2012a). Taxonomic placement of Myxobolus spp.…”

“…Myxosporeans infecting fishes cause loss of production and death. Indian authors like Chakravarty (1939), Tripathi (1952), Lalitha-Kumari (1965, 1969, Seenappa and Manohar (1981), Sarkar (1985aSarkar ( , b, 1986, Haldar (2003, 2004), Banerjee et al (2011), Kaur and Singh (2012), and Thounaojam et al (2013) contributed a lot on myxosporean parasites of the tropical and subtropical countries. Data on myxosporean infections were also presented from different countries.…”
