A Synopsis of the Scolytine Ambrosia Beetles of Thailand (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae)

Abstract: The present state of knowledge of the scolytine ambrosia beetles of Thailand is summarised to provide a basis for future studies of the fauna and its economic importance in forestry, timber production and crop tree plantations. A checklist of the fauna is provided with information on local and world distribution, host trees, biology and taxonomy. Six faunal elements based on geographical distribution, and the host tree and altitudinal preferences of species are discussed. One hundred and sixty-one species are … Show more

“…With a few exceptions (Hulcr and Cognato 2013;Beaver et al 2014), the scolytine fauna of southeast Asia and China are poorly known and contain numerous undescribed species (A. Cognato, personal observation). Increased study of the diversity of this fauna is necessary given the large numbers of specimens intercepted at US ports (Haack and Rabaglia 2013).…”

“…Despite these efforts, the taxonomy of the tribe remains problematic due to its large diversity of more than 1,168 species . The overwhelming majority of species have been described/placed in Xyleborus Eichhoff, how-ever, many species have been transferred to other genera in recent publications (Hulcr and Cognato 2013;Beaver et al 2014). Ambrosiophilus is one of the most recently described xyleborine genera and is native to the Oriental and Oceanic regions.…”
