A synopsis of Ipomoea (Convolvulaceae) in the Americas

Abstract: Summary Austin, D. F. & Huáman, Z.: A synopsis of Ipomoea (Convolvulaceae) in the Americas. – Taxon 45: 3‐38. 1996. – ISSN 0040‐0262. A total of 339 taxa (327 species, five varieties, five subspecies) currently are recognized in the Americas, with the caveat that additional taxa exist that are unstudied and undescribed. Those species recognized are placed, when possible, in infrageneric categories. Known distributions are given for each taxon. Synonyms and names of uncertain application are listed.

“…The fl oral structure of the genus Ipomoea is almost the same, a gamopetalous fl ower, resembling that of the morning glory. This genus Ipomoea is classifi ed into several sections based on reproductive and morphological traits (Austin and Huáman 1996 ). For instance, the section Pharbitis includes both the self-incompatible Ipomoea serifera and the self-compatible species I. purpurea ; both horticultural varieties are known as morning glory.…”

“…Electrophoresis was conducted in a 1X TBE buffer [100 mL 10X TBE (0.89M Tris base, 0.89M Boric acid, 20 mM EDTA pH 8.0) and 900 mL distilled water] at 60 V for 30 min and then at 120 V for 1.5 h. The gel was then stained in silver nitrate (Bassam et al, 1991), using 125 mL fixation buffer (10% absolute ethanol, 5% absolute acetic acid, 895 mL distilled water) and 0.2% silver nitrate for 5 min. The gel then was washed twice with 150 mL distilled water, and stained with 125 mL revelation buffer (30% sodium hydroxide in 1000 mL distilled water), adding 0.4% phormaldeid.…”
