Environmental degradation due to the carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels has triggered the need for sustainable and renewable energy. Hydrogen has the potential to meet the global energy requirement due to its high energy density; moreover, it is also clean burning. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is a method that generates hydrogen from water by using solar radiation. Despite the advantages of PEC water splitting, its applications are limited by poor efficiency due to the recombination of charge carriers, high overpotential, and sluggish reaction kinetics. The synergistic effect of using different strategies with cocatalyst decoration is promising to enhance efficiency and stability. Transition metal-based cocatalysts are known to improve PEC efficiency by reducing the barrier to charge transfer. Recent developments in novel cocatalyst design have led to significant advances in the fundamental understanding of improved reaction kinetics and the mechanism of hydrogen evolution. To highlight key important advances in the understanding of surface reactions, this review provides a detailed outline of very recent reports on novel PEC system design engineering with cocatalysts. More importantly, the role of cocatalysts in surface passivation and photovoltage, and photocurrent enhancement are highlighted. Finally, some challenges and potential opportunities for designing efficient cocatalysts are discussed.

Solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting into hydrogen fuel is a promising avenue for renewable energy conversion to overcome energy crises and environmental concerns. Earth-abundant Si semiconductors with excellent light-harvesting capabilities are suitable photocathode candidates for the PEC hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but suffer from intrinsic instability and sluggish kinetics. Extensive studies have demonstrated that surface/interface engineering can serve as an effective strategy for fabricating Si-based photocathodes with sufficient surface catalytic activity and facile interfacial carrier transport. In this Review, we first briefly introduce the current status of PEC HER using Si-based photocathodes and summarize their fabrication techniques. Subsequently, a systematic overview of recent achievements in surface/interface engineering of Si-based photocathodes is presented to illustrate their distinct roles in boosting the PEC-HER performance. Finally, the perspective views regarding the further development of practical Si-based photocathodes are discussed. This Review aims to promote an in-depth understanding and technical evaluation of surface/interface engineering strategies for efficient Si-based PEC HER.

To design a high‐efficiency crystalline silicon (c‐Si) photocathode, the photovoltage and photocurrent generated by the device must be maximized because these factors directly affect the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, a c‐Si p–n junction is used to enhance the photovoltage of the c‐Si photocathode, and a tapered microwire array structure is introduced to increase the photocurrent. When tapered microwire arrays are employed on the front surface of the c‐Si photocathode, a current density of ≈41.7 mA cm−2 is achieved at 0 VRHE (reversible hydrogen electrode); this current density is the highest among all reported photocathodes including c‐Si, approaching the theoretical maximum value for c‐Si. Furthermore, a Ni foil/Pt catalyst is introduced on the opposite side of the incident light, simultaneously serving as an electrocatalyst to reduce side reactions in the HER and encapsulation layer to prevent c‐Si from contacting the electrolyte. Thus, a stable device is developed using c‐Si photoelectrochemical cells that have an efficiency exceeding 97% for >1000 h.
