A Symmetric Dual-Inductor Hybrid Dickson Converter for Direct 48V-to-PoL Conversion

Abstract: This work introduces a new Symmetric Dual-Inductor Hybrid (SDIH) Dickson DC-DC converter topology that is suitable for large conversion ratios where regulation is required, such as direct 48 V to Point-of-Load (PoL) applications. A Dickson-type switched-capacitor network is used to effectively produce two interleaved PWM drives with a greatly reduced voltage amplitude relative to the input line voltage, in turn allowing magnetic volume to be reduced while retaining modest switching frequencies. Both even and o… Show more

“…(h) D-2L-direct PWM. Presented in [11], this topology results from converting the S-2L-direct PWM topology into its dual switch column variant, similar to the transformation from S-2L-tank into D-2L-tank. By doing so current is now symmetrically balanced among all components at both even and odd conversion ratios, with equal flying capacitor values being preferred.…”

“…Step-up instantiations using either Dickson or CW networks were presented in [61] and [62] respectively where no consideration was given to either capacitor sizing or splitphase operation due to the use of diodes. Conversely, the modern synchronous variant described in [11] achieves bidirectional regulation capability with 2-phase operation on all switches bar the four mentioned.…”

“…[5][6][7][8] The addition of an inductor suppresses sudden current changes during switching transitions and improves losses due to hard charging. In addition, papers [9][10][11][12][13][14][15] presented a dual-inductor hybrid (DIH) converter with an additional inductor. The use of two inductors in the DIH converter allows an even larger step-down ratio while maintaining the same duty cycle, thus reducing the inductor current ripple, and enabling high-current output.…”
