A sustainable approach to laboratory experimentation

Abstract: Sustainability is currently a general concern in society and in particular in the use of laboratories for educational purposes. Although laboratories are unavoidable facilities for education, they often produce waste resulting from students' experiments. To contribute for sustainable solutions in education, the use of remote laboratories instead of the traditional hands-on laboratories should be considered in every engineering course. It is precisely this aspect that is discussed in the current paper. Some com… Show more

“…Another critical study focuses on the sustainability of system architecture and teaching outcomes [49]. Finally, a specific study points out that a sustainable approach for remote engineering labs could be based on well-designed experiments which favor a "learning from failure process" and could promote creativity [50]. In parallel, the studies mentioned before emphasizing the need for efficient management of resources.…”

“…Actually, practical experimentation is considered one of the most critical gaps that facing the success of distance learning process in schools and universities. So, it is necessary to focus on the development of efficient and reliable remotecontrolled laboratories to accommodate the practical parts in the entire educational courses and programs [1]- [2]. Remote experimentation arises from different motivations: It allows teachers to better demonstrate physical concepts during a traditional lecture, by simply connecting to the remote lab and running the experiments.…”

“…In these projects, each partner was simultaneous a supplier and a user: each partner/user has access to many more resources (experiments, data, etc. ) In the Electric and Electronic Circuits area, VISIR is the best and well known remote laboratory, the longest-running and also the most documented, with more than one hundred technical and scientific publications (Felgueiras et al, 2019;García-Zubía et al, 2020), for which this CoP had a crucial role. In effect, VISIR was recognized as the best remote controlled laboratory by the Executive Committee of Global Online Laboratory Consortium, in 2015 ("IAOE: Winners for the GOLC Online Laboratory Award, 11 February 2015," n.d.).…”
