A survival Kit for pancreatic beta cells: stem cell factor and c-Kit receptor tyrosine kinase

Abstract: The interactions between c-Kit and its ligand, stem cell factor (SCF), play an important role in haematopoiesis, pigmentation and gametogenesis. c-Kit is also found in the pancreas, and recent studies have revealed that c-Kit marks a subpopulation of highly proliferative pancreatic endocrine cells that may harbour islet precursors. c-Kit governs and maintains pancreatic endocrine cell maturation and function via multiple signalling pathways. In this review we address the importance of c-Kit signalling within t… Show more

“…The c-Kit receptor is the product of the c-kit proto-oncogene and belongs to the receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) superfamily, with the members of this family being the cardinal regulators of cellular fate in the mammalian body (17). As an important member of the type III RTK family, it has a highly specific and restricted expression pattern, with prominent c-Kit levels expressed on the surface of hematopoietic cells, mast cells (MCs) and interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) (18,19).…”

“…The c-Kit receptor is the product of c-Kit proto-oncogene, belonging to the receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) superfamily, which is the main regulator of mammalian cell fate (24). c-Kit is an important member of the type III RTK family, is highly specific, and has a restricted expression pattern, expressed in hematopoietic cells, mast cells, and on the surface of the ICC (25,26).…”

“…SCF and its receptor c-kit play an essential role in hemopoiesis and maintaining hematopoietic stem cell survival, mast cell stimulation, mediating the function of the pancreas, and melanogenesis [ 23 ]. A mutation in SCF could cause anemia, lack of mast cells, immaturity and loss of functions of pancreatic endocrine cells, and disappearance of pigmentation, as well as the absence of melanocytes [ 24 , 25 ]. c-Kit is a receptor tyrosine kinase expressed on melanocytes.…”
