A Survey on Smartphone-Based Crowdsensing Solutions

Abstract: In recent years, the widespread adoption of mobile phones, combined with the ever-increasing number of sensors that smartphones are equipped with, greatly simplified the generalized adoption of crowdsensing solutions by reducing hardware requirements and costs to a minimum. These factors have led to an outstanding growth of crowdsensing proposals from both academia and industry. In this paper, we provide a survey of smartphone-based crowdsensing solutions that have emerged in the past few years, focusing on 64… Show more

“…Multiple applications could benefit from a flexible payment system, from P2P distributed storage schemes, where users could hire local disk space for an economical incentive, to more sophisticated scenarios, like mobile crowdsensing [50]. Mobile crowdsensing (MCS) is a distributed application where the power of the crowd, jointly with the sensing capabilities of smartphones they wear, provides a powerful tool for data sensing, especially in those scenarios involving user behavior or those that rely on user mobility, where standard sensor networks may not be suitable.…”

“…An updated review and a comparison of a selection of them is reported in [39][40][41]. Moreover, an extensive survey [42] shows evidence that there is still much heterogeneity in terms of technologies applied and deployment approaches, although modular designs at both client and server elements seem to be dominant. The Android mobile operating system is the most diffuse client platform, while server platforms are typically web-based, and client-server communications mostly rely on XML or JSON over HTTP.…”

“…In addition to traditional personal sensing systems, i.e. applications where a single device is involved, innovative mobile crowdsensing applications have been introduced [33][34] [193]. In crowdsensing applications many smartphone users acquire data that are sent to a cloud server where are processed and the results released to the public in the form of aggregated data and statistics, for example using social networks.…”
