A survey on mobile satellite systems

Abstract: Satellite systems represent a significant solution to provide communication services to mobile users in under-populated regions, in emergency areas, on planes, trains, and ships. In all these cases, satellite systems have unique capabilities in terms of robustness, wide area coverage, and broadcast/multicast capabilities. This paper surveys current mobile satellite networks and services from different standpoints, encompassing research issues, recent standardization advances (e.g. mobile extension for DVB-S2/-… Show more

“…However, it is impossible to be equipped with large antennas and high power supply for mobile terminals that need to communicate with each other around the world, such as handsets; the idea of employing lower altitude satellites is put into practice. Details of the satellite orbit, user link frequency band, physical layer, multiple access, satellite features, and intersatellite links (ISL) can be found in [2][3][4][5].…”

“…Satellite networks usually cover a large area; many of them could provide global coverage. Based on the different orbit heights from low to high, communication satellite orbits could be classified as Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) and Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) [4]. The hybrid network of MANET and satellite network, with the advantage of global coverage and high flexibility and mobility, could be an ideal selection, sometimes the only selection, for providing a reliable communication network for disaster sites.…”

“…The hybrid satellite-terrestrial cooperative system is an effective solution to expand the coverage of satellite when the channel condition is bad [1,2]. It differs from the land mobile satellite system by deploying the gap fillers on the ground.…”
