A Survey on License Plate Recognition Systems

Abstract: License Plate Recognition (LPR) is a well known image processing technology. LPR system consists of four steps: capture the image from digital camera, pre-processing, character segmentation and character recognition. License plates are available in various styles and colors in various countries. Every country has their own license plate format. So each country develops the LPR system appropriate for the vehicle license plate format. Difficulties that the LPR systems face are the environmental and non-uniform o… Show more

“…Java DIP Open Source Libraries are commonly used in Java programming language. One of the most challenging aspects of pattern or character recognition is how to successfully distinguish similar patterns/characters, such as (8 vs. B), (0 vs. D vs. O), (5 vs. S) etc [23]. Singh et al [24] have proposed a hybrid method for differentiating similar patterns/characters by comparing the angle of two pixels.…”

“…Then founded zone in the pattern area considered as a candidate and supplemented to candidate region. In [4], some license plate detection algorithms such as dynamic programming-based, Hough transforms, Gabor transforms, morphology-based algorithms, AdaBoost algorithm and edge-based model was discussed. In [5], Fast Fourier transform, discrete wavelet transform & discrete curvelet transform compared to recognize & classify 5 models of vehicles.…”

“…The license plate [2,7,18,57] is one key visual feature on the vehicle; it is one only regular shape on the car, uniform, markers with identity recognition function. In the previous research on automotive collision warning and intelligent vehicle, less attention was paid for the vehicle license plate.…”
