A Survey on Energy-Aware Design and Operation of Core Networks

Abstract: A detailed survey of approaches reducing energy consumption of core networks is presented in this paper. We consider a multilayer architecture, in which the optical layer can be realized either with a Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) network or an Elastic Optical Network (EON). We focus on the design and operation stages, i.e., deciding which devices to install in the network during the former step, and choosing which devices to put into sleep mode during the latter one. A taxonomy for classifying the su… Show more

“…Good and thorough surveys and approaches are presented in [9], [10]. In addition to the energy efficiency techniques for Wavelength Division Multiplexing core networks, the authors in [11] investigated power savings in multi-granular optical transport network, and in [12] the energy efficiency of IP over WDM networks with robust and integrated grooming is addressed.…”

“…One of the most promising approaches to reduce energy consumption of Internet Protocol (IP)-over-Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) networks is the application of Sleep Mode (SM) to network devices (see, e.g., the surveys [1,2]). The main idea of this approach is to dynamically deactivate network resources when they are unused and activate them again when needed.…”
