A Survey on Efficient Parallelization of Blockchain-based Smart Contracts

Abstract: The main problem faced by smart contract platforms is the amount of time and computational power required to reach consensus. In a classical blockchain model, each operation is in fact performed by each node, both to update the status and to validate the results of the calculations performed by others. In this short survey we sketch some state-of-the-art approaches to obtain an efficient and scalable computation of smart contracts. Particular emphasis is given to sharding, a promising method that allows parall… Show more

“…The existence of different types of blocks in blockchains has become common, as it is considered suitable for tackling the problem of scalability [49]. Here, we pursue this idea by designing a scheme with two different types of blocks, but possibly more sophisticated solutions may be taken under consideration for obtaining further worthwhile properties.…”

“…Some of them are the block size increase, the use of off-chain state channels, segregated witness (SegWit) [9], the use of directed acyclic graphs as in [14] and sharding. Among these, sharding seems to be the most promising [8,15], a description of the main platforms adopting this technique is presented in [10].…”
