A survey of urban climate change experiments in 100 cities

Abstract: Highlights► A database analysis reveals urban climate change experimentation as a global trend. ► Experimentation is a recent trend not confined to specific world regions or cities. ► Although experimentation is heterogeneous, energy experiments predominate. ► Multiple actors, often through partnership, intervene in urban climate change governance. ► A characteristic trend of experimentation led by private actors emerges in Asia.

“…reduction of greenhouse gases emissions) and much less on adaptation (i.e. long term strategies to reduce exposure, susceptibility and improve coping capacity of communities to hazards) as these strategies imply taking a precautionary and anticipatory approach (Castán Broto and Bulkeley 2013). However, the implementation of adaptation plans is urgent.…”

“…The case-study based approach has been the general approach in transition studies, but Sengers et al (2016) suggest that new approaches dealing with multiple experiments form a promising research direction in this field. Building on work of Wieczorek, Raven, & Berkhout, (2015), Castán Broto & Bulkeley (2013), and Van den Heiligenberg et al, (2017), this paper contributes to transition literature by showing how a larger number of experiments can be studied and how this reveals some insights into the magnitude and direction of change.…”

“…As stated by Howarth and Painter ( [33], p. 10), "climate change is a local and context-specific issue" and therefore much work in practice on responses to nexus shocks occurs at the local level. Furthermore, with the withdrawal of the state and its funding from the local level, combined with the projected increases in magnitude and frequency of nexus shocks due to climate change in the UK, the need for effective local level responses, collaboration and communication between tiers of society and government as well as research on this area is urgently required [34].…”
