“…We do indeed believe that the presence of significant levels of DHT in non-androgenic tissues, such as, for example, muscle (Geller et al 1978(Geller et al , 1984 (Morales et al 1955, MacFarlane et al 1960, Stoliar & Albert 1974, Ferguson 1975, Sogani etal. 1975, Sanford et al 1977, Markland et al 1978, Labrie et al 1983, 1984, 1985 Prior to our study published in 1982 , 'the effect of combination therapy had never been assessed as initial form of hormonal therapy' (Labrie et al 1983).…”

“…As mentioned earlier, the role of adrenal androgens has never been assessed early after diagnosis of prostate cancer. In fact, adrenalectomy or hypophysectorny [20,[42][43][44][45][46] has always been performed in patients showing relapse of their disease after previous castration or treatment with estrogens. The 20% to 40% positive responses observed by these authors is in agreement with the 20% to 55% rate of response observed in the present study and is a clear indication that the partial hormonal therapy administered to these patients left growing a proportion of tumor cells that are still sensitive to further androgen withdrawal.…”

“…Recently a new compound, estramustine phosphate (Estracyt)2 has been tested and may be efficacious in advanced disease [95][96][97][98]. Various surgical ablation proce dures to reduce androgen levels have been tested [99][100][101]. Analysis of DNA and RNA polymerase, as keys to rates of cell metabolism and protein synthesis, and degradation patterns of administered hormones have been done to elucidate the role of hormones in prostatic activity [102][103][104][105][106], An extensive review and discussion of new data indicating that cyproterone can block specific DNA synthesis during the Gi phase was presented [107].…”
