Paper aims: This research establishes a method to evaluate a concurrent production system in parallel, through new operating curves of six sigma metrics.Originality: Se proposes a novel method that provides criteria to monitor the performance of a production system in changing production conditions.Research method: This research was approached from a logical positivist epistemological model, through a heuristic analysis and with a rational propositional approach to establish the characterization of the model, the evaluation metrics and propose the new operation curves. Main findings:The results obtained show that as the sigma level increases in the global system (4.17), the level of defects per million opportunities decreases considerably and the performance increases at levels close to the main objective of Six Sigma, all this with a decrease of defects from 20.657 to 1.317, generating a high quality of 99.99% and achieving a good performance according to the established quality criteria. Implications for theory and practice:This research provides a new tool where they articulate concepts of six sigma and operating curves to monitor a productive system, which allows in a practical way to determine the real capabilities in terms of quality performance of a system.

PurposeAssembly lines are one of the places where energy consumption is intensive in manufacturing enterprises. The use of robots in assembly lines not only increases productivity but also increases energy consumption and carbon emissions. The purpose of this paper is to minimize the cycle time and total energy consumption simultaneously in parallel robotic assembly lines (PRAL).Design/methodology/approachDue to the NP-hardness of the problem, A Pareto hybrid discrete firefly algorithm based on probability attraction (PHDFA-PA) is developed. The algorithm parameters are optimized using the Taguchi method. To evaluate the results of the algorithm, a multi-objective programming model and a restarted simulated annealing (RSA) algorithm are used.FindingsAccording to the comparative study, the PHDFA-PA has a competitive performance with the RSA. Thus, it is possible to achieve a sustainable PRAL through the proposed method by addressing the cycle time and total energy consumption simultaneously.Originality/valueTo the best knowledge of the authors, this is the first study addressing energy consumption in PRAL. The proposed method for PRAL is efficient in solving the multi-objective balancing problem.

In most mass-production assembly lines, workers perform a set of tasks repetitively predefined by assembly line balancing techniques. The static task assignment often leads to low productivity when the assembly system faces disruptions or uncertainties such as machine breakdown and uneven worker capabilities. The idea of bucket brigades (BB) has been introduced to address the static assignment problems where cooperative behavior of ants is applied to flow line control. This paper examines possible efficiency losses associated with the existing BB-based assembly cell and presents an improved version for assembly cells under uncertain environments. The new system attempts to enhance productivity by assigning assembly tasks to workers dynamically and possibly adding buffers for decoupling consecutive workers. The proposed assembly system is evaluated through simulation experiments under various manufacturing environments. The experimental results show that the new system provides higher productivity than the naïve BB-based assembly cell as well as traditional assembly cells, especially for uncertain assembly environments.
