A survey of the correspondence between abrasions and tooth brushing habits in Erzurum, Turkey

Abstract: The prevalence of tooth brushing abrasions increases with age, and lesions are seen more frequently in males than in females. Also, tooth brushing technique is not important to the presence of abrasions, but increased tooth brushing frequency results in an increase in the number of abrasions.

“…Even though manufacturers and professionals mostly recommend specifi c brushing methods for electric toothbrushes, it is assumed that in practice it is performed with a technique similar to manual brushing. However, Akgul et al [2003] found no signifi cant relation between abrasion and toothbrushing technique, but an association between abrasion and toothbrushing frequency. Heath and Wilson [1974] found that manual toothbrushing is performed with a frequency of 4.5 strokes/s.…”

“…The present study is in concordance with this expectancy as the probability of cervical abrasion and subsequent hypersensitivity increases with increase in age with other available literature. [31][32][33][34][35][36]37 Together, age and brushing frequency expression for accumulated brushing time in the individuals, the importance of accumulated brushing time for the development of abrasive lesions is indicated that only subjects with least abrasion are youngest age group could be less exposure to abrasive cleaning aids and harmful brushing technique. [34][35][36]37 Horizontal brushing strokes invariably causes abrasion, in vivo it is proved that faulty tooth brushing has a significant role in causing abrasion and subsequent hypersensitivity.…”

“…From these studies it has been recommended that tooth brushing force should not exceed 3N [20]. Akgul, et al [30] stated the prevalence of tooth brushing abrasions was seen more frequently in males than in females. This doesn't contradict the result of this study that brushing force of males was higher than that of females.…”
