A survey of prototype and experiment for UAV communications

Abstract: Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications have attracted significant attention from both academia and industry. To facilitate the large-scale usage of UAVs for various applications in practice, we provide a comprehensive survey on the prototype and experiment for UAV communications. To this end, we first provide an overview on the general architecture of the prototype and experiment for UAV communications, and then present experimental verification for air-to-ground channel models and UAV energy consumption… Show more

“…During the flight of the UAV swarm, the communication is formed into an ad hoc (point-to-point) network [27], and the location of UAVs is constantly changing. Depending on whether there is a communication node, the communication mode between UAVs can be divided into direct communication and indirect communication [28].…”

“…Over the recent years, the research community focused efforts on equipping flying platforms with radio communications capabilities by advancing the UAV setups in both centralized [12] and distributed systems [13]. There is already a large body of literature on mmWave-based UAV cellular networking, which includes channel [14] and antenna [15] modeling, coverage analysis [16], 3D beam management [17], positioning [18], trajectory design [19], interference assessment [20], performance optimization [21], experimental studies [22], and UAV prototype development [23].…”

“…Solving the former system, we obtain the roots ( 18)-( 20) that correspond to the intersection points A 1 , A 2 of the locus circle and the ellipse related to device A. Similarly, we solve the second system for the locus circle and the ellipse related to device B and obtain the coordinates of points B 1 , B 2 , B 3 , B 4 as provided in ( 21)- (23). The coordinates are as follows:…”

“…Despite the rapid growth of drone development and marketing, there are very limited reviews showing a road map of step-by-step growth in drone’s capabilities distinguishing their types, categories, design and functionality, application, specific developments and major domains of researches [ 5 ]. Such reviews are important inputs to select or equip the flying robots for a specific use, to realize the impact of drones in the upcoming society and to grasp important information of its successive growth and current researches and advancements [ 6 ]. Thus, for summarizing all such researches, a survey is carried-out over top journals and conference research articles published in the last decade.…”
