A Survey of Opportunistic Networks

Abstract: Abstract-We define an opportunistic network as one type of challenged networks where network contacts are intermittent or where link performance is highly variable or extreme. In such a network, there does not exist a complete path from source to destination for most of the time. In addition, the path can be highly unstable and may change or break quickly. Therefore, in order to make communication possible in an opportunistic network, the intermediate nodes may take custody of data during the blackout and forw… Show more

“…Opportunistic networks emerged as one of the interesting evolution of multi-hop ad-hoc networks. Current scenario in networking-architecture developments, like delay and disruption tolerant networks, and opportunistic networking, aim to deal with the disconnections that naturally and frequently arise in wireless environments [16,17]. Their objective is to allow communication in dynamic networks, like in a MANET, even if a direct route between sender and receiver does not exist in the network.…”

“…Opportunistic networks [1] are special networks in which nodes contact each other opportunistically to forward information. Due to unpredictable node mobility and without any fixed infrastructures, there is not an end-toend path in most situations.…”

And it also helped Verichele, et al, [6] to gather mobility traces at an international music festival to simulate and integrate existing DTN protocols.…”
