A Survey of Obstetric Perianesthesia Care Unit Standards

Abstract: Guidelines put forth by the American Society of Anesthesiologists Task Force on Postanesthetic Care and the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses apply to all postoperative patients regardless of their recovery locations. Results from this survey suggest that the level of care provided for postanesthesia recovery from cesarean delivery in North American academic institutions may not meet these guidelines.

“…This is a very important question and one of the main questions about the anesthetic drugs used for IVF procedures is their effects on the oocyte and the embryo ( 21 , 22 ). However, when we administer local anesthetics in the subarachnoid space and use spinal anesthesia for these patients, the blood level of the anesthetic drugs is really very much lower ( 23 - 25 ), and this is the most possible explanation for the findings of our study in which the outcome is better for the spinal anesthesia group. This explanation for our findings shows higher chance of IVF success in such patients; this would be in concordance with a number of other similar studies ( 4 , 7 , 26 ).…”

“…20 Fortyfive percent of institutions do not require their L&D nurses to have any training specific to postanesthesia nursing care. A survey of 135 obstetric anesthesia directors in North American academic institutions asked them for information about their postcesarean recovery rooms on L&D, and reported some disturbing results.…”
