A Survey of Medium Access Control Protocols in Wireless Sensor Network

Abstract: With the recent technological advances of wireless sensor network (WSN) and the nature of wireless sensor networks which is the power constraint, researchers face new challenges related to the design of algorithms and protocols. This work tries to survey the research that has been conducted on a number of levels to design and assess the deployment of wireless sensor networks. It highlights the current state of the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol in WSN with a view to advance the research in the field.

“…The MAC protocols for WSNs can be broadly classified into 3 categories [21] viz., Schedule-based, Contention-based, and Hybrid. The Schedule-based MAC protocols prepare a valid schedule for data communication to handle the collision, which is one of the prominent source of energy wastes in WSNs [1].…”

“…First, UWB channel and propagation issues which have been quite thoroughly covered in the recent years, e.g., in [27] and [29], thus their reference lists offer a number of indepth articles to the interested reader. Second, MAC related studies are not discussed as it is an extensively wide topic area on its own having resulted in several recent detailed articles, e.g., [30] - [32]. To summarize, the main contributions of this article are:…”
