A Survey of Emerging Biometric Technologies

Abstract: Computer Security System / technology have passed through several changes. The trends have been from what you know (e.g. password, PIN, etc) to what you have (ATM card, Driving License, etc) and presently to who you are (Biometry) or combinations of two or more of the trios. This technology (biometry) has come to solve the problems identified with knowledge-based and token-based authentication systems. It is possible to forget your password and what you have can as well be stolen. The security of determining … Show more

“…We believe this would help in identifying gaps that could be filled in the future by researchers. We take the opportunity to present a survey of the state‐of‐the‐art in the traditional and emerging modalities . Due to the wide variety of modalities currently available, our survey is focused more on breadth rather than depth.…”

“…While much biometric research involves authenticating the identity of living individuals by comparing them with who they claim to be, postmortem applications of biometrics often involve the identification of an unknown individual . Therefore, postmortem biometrics such as fingerprints, irises, and facial recognition may be a useful approach toward establishing a positive identification of unknown human remains in forensic settings.…”
