A survey of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Korea

Abstract: Despite MRSA-endemic hospital settings, CA-MRSA infections are not common in Korea. A new clone of CA-MRSA, ST72-SCCmec type IVa without the PVL gene, is the most common form.

“…There are also growing concerns about increasing methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) infections in both community and nosocomial settings. Although rates of community-associated (CA) MRSA infection are still low in Korea, MRSA accounts for over 60% of S. aureus nosocomial isolates, and there has also been a shift to increasing rates of CA-MRSA disease [3,4]. …”

“…Invasive S. aureus (ISA) infections, defined as the isolation of S. aureus from a normally sterile site (e.g., bacteremia), are associated with high morbidity and mortality (1). Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) accounts for about 60% of nosocomial S. aureus infections, and community-associated MRSA disease has been increasing in Korea (1,2). Although new antistaphylococcal antibiotics have been developed, vancomycin retains the first-line position as treatment for MRSA infections (3).…”

“…In addition, the recent emergence and spread of community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) in health care settings have increased the importance of this microorganism (4). CA-MRSA has also emerged as an important pathogen in South Korea (5), where its genetic profile differs markedly from that in other countries (6)(7)(8).…”
