A survey of Calliphoridae and Mesembrinellidae (Diptera) in semideciduous seasonal forest, Paraná, Brazil

Abstract: Calliphoridae and Mesembrinellidae include Diptera species that are good indicators of changes in forest environments. The present work aimed to inventory the Calliphoridae and Mesembrinellidae in Ilha Grande National Park and correlate the abundance of these organisms with environmental variables. Adult dipterans were collected during two expeditions in 2019 using two sampling methods, a Malaise trap and baited traps, distributed on two islands in the park. During the study, 1,007 individuals of 12 species of… Show more

“…Laneela nigripes and Mesembrinella bellardiana were considered the most abundant in less anthropic areas. These data corroborate with [ 24 , 27 , 28 ]. Several studies over the decades portray the Mesembrinellidae family as asynanthrope, being found exclusively in forest areas or deeper spots in forest fragments [ 29 ].…”

“…This finding may indicate greater potential for these species as forensic indicators for forested areas, due to the large number of immatures developing on the corpses and of visiting adults. No immature forms of C. albiceps were observed in the present study, however, a high number of adults was collected, which may be due to difficulty in competing with forest species since C. albiceps is a species that presents a high degree of synanthropy (Souza et al 2021). This also demonstrates that the adult species of Diptera collected from the corpses may not represent the true larval fauna that develops there.…”

“…The most abundant species sampled was Chrysomya albiceps (38%), followed by Hemilucilia semidiaphana (25%), which are considered synanthropic in several regions of Brazil (Souza et al 2021). These species were collected in the urban area of Manaus in an experiment with swine corpses (Barros-Souza and Ferreira-Keppler 2013), and in a forest reserve surrounded by strong anthropic pressure in a peri-urban area (Ururahy-Rodrigues et al al.…”
