This thesis investigates the application of Reinforcement Learning (RL) on Medium Access Control (MAC) for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). RL is applied as an intelligent slot selection strategy to Framed ALOHA, along with analytical and experimental performance evaluation. Informed Receiving (IR) and ping packets are applied to multi-hop WSNs to avoid idle listening and overhearing, thereby further improving the energy efficiency.The low computational complexity and signalling overheads of the ALOHA schemes meet the design requirement of energy constraint WSNs, but suffer collisions from the random access strategy. RL is applied to solve this problem and to achieve perfect scheduling. Results show that the RL scheme achieves over 0.9 Erlangs maximum throughput in single-hop networks. For multi-hop WSNs, IR and ping packets are applied to appropriately switch the relay nodes between active and sleep state, to reserve as much energy as possible while ensuring no information loss.The RL algorithms require certain time to converge to steady state to achieve the optimum performance. The convergence behaviour is investigated in this thesis. A Markov model is proposed to describe a learning process, and the model produces the proof of the convergence of the learning process and the estimated convergence time. The channel performance before convergence is also evaluated.Contents

In this paper, we introduce a novel multiple access scheme for aerial sensor networks employing adaptive antenna arrays with spatial reuse. Spatial reuse has been adopted to enable simultaneous data transmission among unmanned aerial vehicles in a context of spatial diversity. This work introduces two types of UAV: a single main actor UAV and multiple actor UAVs. Since these UAVs cooperatively perform a mission, packet collisions and signal interference can degrade a real time data transmission among them. In light of this, we propose a circularly multi-directional beam forming array antenna to be used on the main actor UAV and each UAV is equipped with a directional antenna. These two kinds of antenna are deployed so that packet collisions and signal interference can be alleviated. The main UAV is positioned in the center and surrounded by actor UAVs. By using different antennas on different types of UAV and based on the UAVs positioning, the paper proposes two MAC protocols. While both proposed MAC protocols adopt a conventional IEEE 802.11 MAC, the second one introduces a certain threshold value of angle between UAVs to enable a spatial reuse. Simulation results confirm that our proposed MAC protocols offer a huge gain in system throughput compared to an IEEE 802.11 protocol.

Dynamic starting late there has been a creating energy for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). Late movements in the field of sensing, enrolling and exchanges have pulled in examination attempts and colossal endeavors from distinctive quarters in the field of WSN. Also such sensing networks will reveal as of now in mystery phenomena. The diverse areas where noteworthy examination activities proceeding in the field of WSN are exploitation, localization, synchronization, data gathering/aggregation, dissemination, database addressing or querying, structural design, middleware, security, sketching out less power exhausting contraptions (devices), and towering algorithms for specific dilemmas of WSN's.
