A survey for gregarines (Protozoa: Apicomplexa) in arthropods in Spain

Abstract: Gregarines thrive in the digestive tract of arthropods and may be deleterious to their hosts, especially when present in high densities. The impact of parasites on these invertebrates may affect both the ecosystem equilibrium and human economic activities. However, information available on gregarines in Spain is limited. Therefore, a microscopic study on prevalence of gregarine infection in 560 insects and crustaceans was undertaken in Madrid and Tarragona.Gregarina ormierei (78 % prevalence), Stylocephalus gi… Show more

“…The feces of the High-4150 population contained biome microorganisms of insects, e.g., Trichosporon insectorum and several Gregarinasina (Leidyana, Selenidium, and Stenophora) but a low number of coxI from insects. Trichosporon insectorum is a basidiomycete yeast and the resident of the gut of insects [75], while Gregarinasina are intracellular parasitic apicomplexan alveolates found in the intestinal epithelial cells of cockroaches, mealworms, grasshoppers, crickets, crayfishes, and centipedes [76]. We hypothesize that the High-4150 population extracts as much nutrients from their food as possible by maintaining it longer in their lumen.…”

“…Invertebrates typically host a great number of organisms in their gut, among which gregarines (Apicomplexa: Sporozoa) are probably the most frequently reported across terrestrial, marine and freshwater species (Bollatti and Ceballos, 2014;Criado-Fornelio et al, 2017).…”

“…Within the scope of this work, it is interesting to mention that gregarines, at least those from crustaceans, appear to be highly amenable to their environment, even under "extreme" conditions where the host organisms have become highly specialized, typically resorting to a form of symbiosis with bacteria in order to acquire nutrients and survive (Bright and Lallier 2010). While we did not collect data related the mechanisms that allow gregarines to exploit these environments, gregarines can be found in arthropods from freshwater, marine (Rueckert et al 2011a), and terrestrial habitats (Criado-Fornelio et al 2017), highlighting the extent to which this group of apicomplexan parasites is able to adapt.…”
